Abracadabra

When I was a kid I loved magicians. I didn’t really believe in the magic, but I loved the suspense a good magician creates in the set up. Whatever the trick or illusion, it culminates with the magician exclaiming “abracadabra,” then something or someone appears out of nowhere.

“Abracadabra” traces its roots to the Aramaic phrase avra kehdabra — “I create as I speak.” While the word has long been associated with stage magicians and illusionists, the deeper meaning carries a powerful truth for leaders, entrepreneurs, athletes, and anyone pursuing meaningful goals: what we consistently speak, declare, and pursue has a profound impact on what we ultimately create.

Too many of us treat goals like private wishes. We keep dreams locked away in silence, afraid of failure, criticism, or embarrassment. But history repeatedly shows that people who clearly define and communicate their goals dramatically increase their chances of achieving them. There is power in making your intentions known.

Researchers at Dominican University of California found that people who write down their goals are significantly more likely to achieve them than those who simply think about them. Even more compelling, participants who shared their goals and progress updates with others achieved far more than those who kept their ambitions private. Accountability creates momentum. Spoken goals create commitment.

That is the principle behind avra kehdabra.

When you speak your vision, you begin creating your future. Your words shape your mindset. Your mindset influences your actions. Your actions determine your outcomes. What starts as language eventually becomes reality.

When I was an executive, a large part of my role involved developing long-term strategy for our organization. Every year, we would clearly define and write down our five-year goals, present them to leadership, and create detailed strategies designed to achieve them. Around those strategies, we established key objectives and measurable performance indicators that held us accountable for progress. Then, year after year, we refined and adjusted the plan as circumstances changed and opportunities evolved. 

Looking back, there is no question we would never have built our business as successfully as we did without a written strategy, clearly communicated goals, and measurable benchmarks tied to them. Simply hoping for growth would never have produced the same results. The discipline of declaring goals, documenting them, communicating them, and tracking performance turned vision into reality. 

The same is true in leadership. Leaders who clearly communicate vision inspire alignment and action. Teams rally around spoken direction. Families become stronger when goals are openly discussed. Organizations grow when missions are clearly articulated. Silence breeds uncertainty, but clarity creates movement.

This does not mean merely speaking positive affirmations while avoiding hard work. Words alone are not magic. However, words combined with intentional planning, discipline, and accountability become extraordinarily powerful. Speaking goals aloud creates psychological ownership. It transforms “I hope” into “I will.”

A widely cited study on accountability found that people have approximately a 65% chance of completing a goal if they commit to someone else. That probability rises to as high as 95% when they establish ongoing accountability appointments. Why? Because declared goals create responsibility. Once spoken, they become real.

Many successful people instinctively understand this principle. Athletes announce championships. Businesses publish strategic visions. Authors talk about books before they are written. Leaders cast vision before results exist. They are practicing a modern version of avra kehdabra — creating as they speak.

Your future is often built first in your language.

If you want to accomplish something meaningful, do not merely think about it. Define it. Write it down. Speak it clearly. Share it with trusted people who will encourage accountability. Build plans around it. Then pursue it relentlessly.

The phrase “Abracadabra” may sound mystical, but its underlying principle is deeply practical. We move toward the futures we repeatedly declare and intentionally pursue.

Create as you speak. Then work your butt off until what you have spoken becomes reality.
